Mali's foot-dragging traps peace mission in unending conflict
Thu, 08 Dec 2016 02:35:11 -0500
By Tim Cocks BAMAKO (Reuters) - Last week, the offices of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in the desert city of Gao in northern Mali were flattened by a truck bomb. On Tuesday, just five suspected Islamist militants succeeded in freeing 93 inmates from a jail in the town of Niono. As both rebels and government go slow on implementing a deal signed last year, it is the U.N. peacekeeping mission, which has lost 100 lives and is costing nearly a billion dollars a year, that is paying the price.

South Korea parliament introduces bill to impeach Park; vote due Friday
Thu, 08 Dec 2016 02:32:31 -0500
By Ju-min Park and Jack Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's parliament introduced a bill on Thursday to impeach President Park Geun-hye, setting the stage for a historic vote to oust the embattled leader engulfed in an influence-peddling scandal. Parliament is expected to vote on Friday in favour of impeachment, although the Constitutional Court must decide whether to uphold the motion, a process that could take up to 180 days. Opposition parties have said they believe they will get the two-thirds majority needed to pass the bill, with support from about 30 members of Park's conservative Saenuri Party to secure the necessary 200 votes.

Tunisian union reaches wage deal with government, cancels strike
Thu, 08 Dec 2016 02:24:08 -0500
Tunisia's powerful UGTT union has cancelled a planned public- sector general strike after reaching an agreement with the government on salary increases covering the next two years, officials said on Wednesday. The agreement reduces the prospect of widespread social unrest over austerity measures proposed in the 2017 draft budget, though the government still faces protests and industrial action from several sectors. The UGTT had called a strike for Thursday over a proposed freeze on public-sector wage increases.

If impeached, South Korean president's fate in hands of nine judges
Thu, 08 Dec 2016 02:22:28 -0500
By Jack Kim and Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) - If South Korean President Park Geun-hye is impeached in parliament on Friday, she faces an uphill court battle to overturn the motion, experts say, even though the judges were all appointed by her and her conservative predecessor. An impeachment vote appears likely, and the nine-judge Constitutional Court would have up to six months to uphold or overturn it.

Iran minister says in U.S. interest to stay committed to nuclear treaty
Thu, 08 Dec 2016 02:16:02 -0500
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Thursday it was in the interest of the United States to remain committed to a multilateral nuclear treaty. The U.S. Senate voted last week to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for 10 years, and Iran vowed to retaliate, saying it violated last year's agreement with six major powers to curb its nuclear program in return for the lifting of international financial sanctions. A diplomatic thaw between the United States and Iran over the past two years appears in jeopardy with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump taking office next month.

Trump taps China ambassador, consults Obama
Thu, 08 Dec 2016 01:49:13 -0500
President-elect Donald Trump selected a political ally with close ties to China as ambassador to Beijing, stressed his determination to create US jobs and revealed he consulted with Barack Obama on his cabinet picks. Trump antagonized China last week by taking a protocol-busting telephone call from the leader of Taiwan, and then railed against Beijing for alleged currency manipulation, unfair taxes and militarizing the South China Sea. Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, on Wednesday urged Washington to block President Tsai Ing-wen from passing through the United States after reports said she may stop in New York to meet the Trump team.

Love in the time of Trump: Dating sites for politically passionate
Thu, 08 Dec 2016 01:45:01 -0500
The encounter had seemed promising enough, but the couple brought together by an online dating site failed to connect because of one glaring, irreconcilable difference: He was a Donald Trump supporter, she was not. Adored by millions of Americans, Trump is reviled by at least as many, some of whom are still mourning his election last month as America's next president and the defeat of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. A similar site was set up for supporters of Bernie Sanders, the tousle-haired Vermont senator whose fiery rhetoric and embrace of environmental causes earned him a fervent and loyal following among liberals and voters under the age of 30.

Jabari Parker led the Bucks with 27 points, 10 of them in the third quarter as Milwaukee erased a seven-point halftime deficit. After connecting on just three of 11 from three-point range in the first half, Milwaukee hit six from beyond the arc in the third.
